Dangers of Tongue Piercing

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), November 21, 2014 – Princeview Dental (www.PrinceviewDental.com), one of Etobicoke’s premier dental clinics, is advising on the dangers of tongue piercings in relation to healthy oral care.

Piercing any part of the body has become normal and accepted behaviour in our society. And though they all come with their own risks, some more than others, tongue piercings can be particularly problematic if not done properly and cared for consistently, according to the experts at Princeview Dental.

“In some cases, it doesn’t even matter if you’ve done everything right,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “Swelling, infections, loss of taste: all of these things can occur without warning, even if you’ve taken all the proper precautions.”

Dr. Mummery explains that patients who have experienced these reactions have had to undergo emergency dental services, and many more problems can potentially occur in the future.

“Aside from relatively minor side effects, like excess drooling or mild irritation, people with tongue piercings can have nerve damage and periodontal disease and are more susceptible to oral cancer,” she adds. “That in itself is a huge risk, and one that needs to be explained before the decision is made to pierce a tongue.”

According to Dr. Mummery, cases of individuals swallowing their tongue ring are not uncommon, nor are instances of chipped teeth caused by jewellery in the mouth. These cases have led to emergency dental services such as root canals and extractions.

“As a dental clinic that sees emergencies, we’re equipped to work with these extreme cases,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “All we’re advocating is that individuals do their research before making such a huge commitment, as there are other forms of expression that are less dangerous.”
