Dental New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is upon us and many people have resolved to improve their health; whether through exercise or an improved diet. However, many people don’t include improving dental care as part of their resolutions. Better dental health can be achieved through treatments such as improving one’s tooth brushing technique or by scheduling that long-delayed appointment with a dentist for a checkup or a cosmetic dentistry procedure.

How to Improve Oral Health

Dental clinics tell their patients that improving their oral hygiene can lead to better overall health and, in turn, motivate them to take better care of themselves. Even small consistent steps can greatly improve your oral health, some of which are explained below.

Better Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing prevents a number of oral health issues, such as gingivitis, bad breath, and tooth decay. Ideally, you should brush at least twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush, either electric or manual, and fluoridated toothpaste. When brushing, place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline; this will effectively remove plaque. Flossing at least once a day is also highly recommended to remove plaque and clean food from between your teeth, as is replacing your toothbrush every three to four months or after you have been sick. Combine brushing and flossing with using antibacterial mouthwash and you’re on your way to improved oral health!

Improved Diet

Many people make an effort to lose weight through an improved diet, but it is also a method for improving your oral hygiene. Make an effort to cut food and drinks containing carbohydrates and acids from your diet, since these contribute to tooth decay. Also brush after each meal; if you can’t, gum and lozenges containing xylitol can neutralize acids and eliminate bacteria that cause plaque buildup and cavities.

Ways to Improve Your Smile

In addition to brushing, flossing, and improving your diet, teeth whitening is a popular procedure for people looking to improve their smile. While over-the-counter teeth whitening kits are available, it is recommended that you undergo this procedure at a dentist’s office.

Braces

Teeth straightening is an excellent way to improve your smile. Whether it’s due to an injury, crooked teeth, or your child sucking their thumb, braces are the ideal way to improve your smile. The added benefit of braces is that they will also improve your oral health. Discuss with your dentist or orthodontist if braces are the best teeth straightening method for you.

Restorative Dentistry

The new year could be when you finally decide to have restorative dental work performed, such as dental implants, fillings, and crowns. These procedures are essential for maintaining the structure and alignment of your teeth, which will improve your oral health.

Quit Smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the top new year’s resolutions. Tobacco can also take a toll on your teeth and gums, and giving it up has a number of benefits beyond respiratory and heart health. Talk to your doctor or check online for effective ways to quit smoking.

Regular Dentist Appointments

Of course, visiting your dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup is important. With regular visits, your dentist will be able to catch any issues before they become worse and recommend dental care treatments that can nip any potential oral health issues in the bud.
