Memory Loss, specifically dementia, is a progressive disease that robs a person of their cognitive abilities and can lead to mobility issues. Over time, a person living with Memory Loss may have difficulty problem-solving, concentrating, following instructions, and understanding the world around them. These and other dementia symptoms, such as confusion and wandering, can lead to dangerous situations for the person living with Memory Loss and for those around them.
At Memory & Company, we provide the gold standard in Memory Care at our Markham and Oakville Clubs. With our Respite Hotel, short-term and long-term accommodations, and our Premium Day Program, people living with a form of Memory Loss, as well as their care partners(s), can enjoy a safe and secure environment to navigate their journey.
Our goal is to redefine Memory Care with our suite of innovative therapies tailored to enhance the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. At the forefront of these therapies are art, music, and pet therapy programs designed to uplift cognitive function, emotional well-being, and overall health.
This article will explore how these creative therapies are making a significant impact on the lives of our Members, one day at a time.
The Benefits of Non-Pharmacological Therapies in Memory Care
While medications can be effective in managing some symptoms of Memory Loss, they often come with limitations and side effects. Traditional treatments may not address the emotional and social aspects crucial to the well-being of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Non-pharmacological therapies are alternative treatment options to the traditional medications commonly used in Memory Care environments. Research in dementia has shown that non-pharmacological therapy is beneficial for cognitive functioning when structured to a person’s abilities and preferences.
Music, art, and pet (MAP) therapies can stimulate the brain, evoke positive emotions, and improve overall well-being, addressing symptoms like anxiety, agitation, and social withdrawal effectively.
It is important to note, however, that non-pharmacological therapies are NOT a substitute for prescribed treatments; instead, they are supplementary when used in combination with medications.
Exploring Innovative Therapies at Memory & Company’s Markham & Oakville Clubs
Music Therapy
As part of the Dementia Care at our Markham and Oakville clubs, we incorporate music therapy into our regular programs to help induce memories and emotions. Those living with Memory Loss can experience anxiety, agitation, aggression, depression, and feelings of loneliness. Music can mentally and emotionally take a person to a magical place and help them reconnect with cherished memories.
We use structured music therapy programs to encourage blood flow to areas of the brain such as the limbic system that controls behavioural and emotional responses. This can stimulate the release of the dopamine neurotransmitter that produces our “pleasure” emotions.
Through music, Members can sing, listen, and move to the rhythm to express their feelings, recall memories, manage stress, and improve sleep. Dance and music encourage physical movement, which leads to better physical, emotional, and mental health.
Art Therapy
The art therapy programs at our Markham and Oakville Clubs engage members in various artistic mediums such as painting, sculpture, and collage-making. These art forms act as communication tools for non-verbal individuals and for those who struggle to find the proper words to express their feelings.
With the assistance of an art therapist, the program is designed to enhance cognitive function, offer avenues for self-expression, and create a social environment to boost interaction with others. Art therapy has been shown to stimulate creativity that can lead to memory recall, refine fine motor skills, and improve spatial reasoning.
The goal of art therapy is to promote a better quality of life in a safe and enjoyable setting. Participation helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting a person’s overall mood. It can be tailored to support the individual’s needs, abilities, and preferences.
Pet Therapy
Pet therapy is used to reduce behavioural issues through hands-on interaction. Supervised by a professional therapist, this program takes a holistic, person-centric approach to reduce the need for traditional pharmaceutical options.
Spending time with animals has been clinically proven to help lower stress while improving mood and the opportunity for social interaction with others. Whether it involves a dog, cat, bird, horse, or rabbit, interacting with an animal motivates physical activity with walking, petting, brushing, and playing.
Studies have shown that petting an animal triggers the release of mood boosters in response to sensory stimulation.
Integrating Therapies at Memory & Company’s Markham & Oakville Clubs
At Memory & Company, art, music, and pet therapy are seamlessly integrated into our daily routines. Each day is thoughtfully planned to include these activities, ensuring that every Member has the opportunity to benefit from them.
Our Personal Support Workers, Nurses, Social Service Workers, Recreation Therapists, and Kinesiologists work with specialized music, art, and pet therapists to formulate a tailored care plan. This personalized approach ensures that each member receives the maximum benefit from their therapy.
We successfully merge these therapies into our Premium Day Program activities to focus on each Member’s cognitive care and physical fitness through socialization opportunities. In addition, we continuously evaluate and adapt our therapy programs based on feedback and observations, ensuring that they remain effective and engaging for all Members.
